Welcome to CIS237!
In my experience the first week of an online class is always lost to "learn the technology." Obviously since I have classes that are a confederacy of loosely strung together technologies, this learning time is extremely importantly; however, I find this time is just as important in a course that is completely restricted to a Learning Management System (LMS) like WebCT or Blackboard. Those systems can be organized in different ways, and you may use different technologies, so it is always important to have that first week of activities to bang on the buttons. This week...you get to bang on the buttons. :-)
Your To-Do List:
- read the syllabus; use the "insert tab" and "comments" feature (with the shared version) to ask questions, make comments, etc.
- listen to week one podcast.
- set up gmail account (send an email from your gmail account to the instructor: shelley.rodrigo@gmail.com)--extra video about using Google Apps
- set up Blogger Blog (send URL to instructor)
- new technology: read the linked Online Learning Resource page assignment prompt (it's got a few videos for your to watch)
- set up iGoogle page (share w/instructor): make links to the course blog, course wiki, course podcast, and your blog--instructions to help
- get account at the course wetpaint wiki (the instructor will email you an invitation)
- Take a screencapture of your desktop (and if you want, a picture of your physical desk as well); post the picture/s in Picasa (make public, consider starting a cis237 album)--no tips here yet...play a little and see if you can figure out how!
- blog entry: introduction and what you want to learn from this course also include picture of desktop linked from Picasa (read & reply to two classmates)

Hi Shelley and fellow classmates.
My name is Peter Combs. I teach meteorology and physical geography at CGC. My goal is to create online courses for these classes, or more precisely create "hybrid courses" until I can find a college to sponsor my online courses.
My blog is "Dr.C's online Chaos" at http://drcsonlinechaos.blogspot.com
A screenshot of my desktop is at http://picasaweb.google.com/peter.combs/CIS03/photo?authkey=LMbsgbUmEpo#5166436823528331218
PS: The course blog calendar says I can read it because I don't have permission. Yet I CAN read it in my google calendar. Hmm. It's always something with techonology.
Peter,
You soooo pegged it with technology. It's one of the non-stresses in my life...I just let it roll. :-)

Hello everyone
My name is Lea Neibarger. I teach Computer Science and Math at GCC. I have found that Computer Science is MUCH easier to teach online than Math. I am hoping to explore and hopefully come up with a way to connect to the students taking Math online.
My desktop screenshot is located here.
Greetings, everyone. I'm Lorna Peralta, Faculty Librarian at MCC and Instructor in the Library Tech program.
This week I've been doing what I advise my online students to do the first week of class, i.e. log in frequently to become familiar with the course interface.
My blog's at http://lorna237.blogspot.com/
I'm looking forward to learning how to incorporate new (and hopefully bandwidth friendly) components into my classes
Hi Lea,
Welcome aboard. It looks to be a good group.
I have a former student who's been telling me the difficulties of taking math online at CGC, and she's a brilliant woman. So you have my sympathies.
My problem is how to teach labs online in a manner suitable for ASU & CGC.
Best wishes.
Peter C.
